Eco-Build Africa undertook this collaborative study with Harvard Graduate School of Design and ETH Zurich. a collaborative study of the city of Nairobi, covering various themes, e.g. transport, waste management, modern architecture, housing, culture, spaces for international organisation, shopping, religion, education, slum upgrading, etc. This first phase of the project was undertaken by Kenyan students alongside ETH-Zurich students and focused mainly on mapping of these key urban functions and sectors.
A second part of the study was an intensive investigation where the Harvard Graduate students paired with senor students from the University of Nairobi explored the following areas in depth:
- Work: this included questions around the opportunities, location, support institutional and physical infrastructure for employment;
- Urban Movement: This included questions around location, movement of people, physical and institutional infrastructure for movement of people and potential for non-conventional transport; and
- Urban Consumer Markets: this explored urban consumption questions from with the markets for consumer goods and services; through seduction into consumption through advertising and marketing, to patterns and the urban infrastructure for consumption.
